Guarded

At first blush she placed a brick
To guard her heart from risk.
And when he reached to smooth her hair,
The wall she crafted thick.

He walked around and with a smile
Asked, “What is this you do?”
She glanced his way, her heart beat wild
“It’s really not meant for you.”

With each tender breathless sigh
That wall became a keep.
Deceive thyself is still a lie.
Her heart began to weep.

Alone beyond the sun and moon
She heard a muffled rap.
“I see you there beyond this wall.”
He tapped a tiny crack.

“Build your fortress, it matters not
I see with vision true.”
With those words he turned away.
His voice her only clue.
