Two for Thanks

Slumber stops as sunlight streams. The boxes home to many dreams.
The music of the city streets awakens all with raucous beat.

With weary eyes some face this day with coat of tattered cast a ways.
A blanket of layered news warms enough to stay the winds that blow
And chill.

Waking in castle of corrugated brown the tiny child hears the sound
Of Mommy singing tunes of snow while scents of holidays begin to flow.

Wrapped in flannel, toasty warm the child giggles through the storm.
Floats of tissue paper meander past the glowing viewing screen
And sing.

A walk before the evening meal brings quiet contemplation.
A passing stranger wrapped in threads smiles and nods.

The streets are barren but for few that seek a moment from other’s view.
A passing stranger wrapped in down smiles and nods.

Table laden with bounty full. The crystal shines as if a jewel.
Voices hush as prayers begin. Heads are bowed in requiem.

The child is thankful for the toy he knows lies wrapped in Mommy’s closet,
While matronly thoughts turn to thanks for child and time and love.

Paper plate with holly leaf. The matching cup with printed wreath.
Eyes lift to one above, hands pressed in thread bare gloves.

For this moment warm and dinner flowing over plate, a simple thanks.
For the light of day and stars of night to wish upon he prays.
